Father's Day

The origins of Father's Day can be traced back to 1909, when a woman in Washington State, Sonora Smart Dodd, came up with the idea of a day to honor fathers. Her father, William Jackson Smart, a veteran who had fought for the Union Army in the Civil War, was also a single father who raised her and five other children. 

Sonia Dowd realized on Mother's Day that fathers play an equally important role in the family and should have a special day dedicated to them. 

So she began to fight for it, and finally on June 19, 1910, the first Father's Day was held in Washington State. The holiday was quickly adopted by other states and countries and became a global tradition.
